June, 2008: Cheryl North for INSIDE BAY AREA Arts and Entertainment writes:
STAR ATTRACTION: While the symphony is exploring
"Asteroids" on its side of Grove Street this week, yet another musical
star, mezzo-soprano Jennifer Larmore, is lighting up the Bay Area's
musical firmament on the other with her role as the imperious Germanic
goddess Fricka in San Francisco Opera's current production of Wagner's
"Das Rheingold," During a recent conversation, the slim,
film-star-beautiful Larmore revealed that she is also a serious amateur
astronomer, and even owns a big Orion telescope she uses to study stars
of the celestial order in her leisure hours.
Not altogether jokingly, she said, "I think if I could have any wish I wanted, it would be to be the first opera star to sing in space." She lists as one of her greatest thrills being invited to the 35th anniversary of the flight of Apollo 11 at the White House alongside Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and other astronauts, in 2004. During the commemorative service, Larmore sang all five verses of "America the Beautiful" (she admitted writing the words to the fifth verse on her hand) for more than 17,000 observers.
The ebullient mezzo is also a serious "Star Trek" fan: Another starry tidbit is her friendship with actor Patrick Stewart, aka Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" series.
"Das Rheingold" continues tonight and for four more performances through June 28 at the War Memorial. Contact 415-864-3330 or www.sfopera.com .
Jennifer gave a wonderful interview with Mark Thomas Ketterson about her early experiences, what led her to this crazy opera life, singing at Covent Garden and being a woman in the business of opera!
